OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – MAY 28: Russell Westbrook #0 of the Oklahoma City Thunder stretches on the court prior to game six of the Western Conference Finals against the Golden State Warriors during the 2016 NBA Playoffs at Chesapeake Energy Arena on May 28, 2016 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Russell Westbrook and I have something in common, we both watched something other than the NBA Finals. We both had very different reasons for not watching and watched different things but we both seemed to have the same amount of apathy about the NBA Finals.

Westbrook snap chatted that he was watching the Whoopi Goldberg film Sister Act 2.

Westbrook had a very good reason why he wasn’t watching the game. Westbrook’s Oklahoma City Thunder got eliminated by the Houston Rockets in the first round of the NBA playoffs. And considering his former teammate Kevin Durant is probably going to get rewarded by skipping out on OKC for the top team in the league and win a title with them, yeah Westbrook would probably rather watch something else.

Myself on the other hand was watching Simpsons reruns, not realizing the NBA Finals started last night because the playoffs drag on way too long. And after watching two teams play 10 minutes of terrible basketball because they had to shake the rust off of them due to not playing since a week to a week and a half ago, decided to catch up on Twin Peaks.

I’m just not into the NBA Finals this year. I have no issue with the same teams making it every year because it’s happened before (Celtics/Lakers) and the NBA was never better. That’s how you create and enrich a rivalry. But when you add that the playoffs seemed like it began a year and a half ago and you have to endure the constant daily prattling of loudmouth “hot take” artists either anointing guys like Steph Curry and LeBron James as either the G.O.A.T. or the worst piece of crap in NBA history solely based on the score of the last game to cater to the “lowest common denominator,” the NBA Finals is kinda “meh” right now. Watch right now, you’ll see the debate shows talk about how LeBron’s legacy is tarnished because the Cavs lost Game 1 in a seven game series.

I’ll watch the highlights and pay attention from afar because it’s my job as a sports writer to be informed. Maybe if it’s not a sweep, I’ll catch the last few games. But I don’t know, guys like Stephen A. Smith suck the fun out of basketball. I get they have to fill multiple hours a day but would it kill First Take to not dissect Curry’s and LeBron’s legacies after every possession of every game and actually give it some time before declaring where somebody is in NBA history? Given how much they do it, it probably would.
