Clemson’s depth at the defensive end position is taking a hit as the season edges closer and closer, and the latest injury falls into the “bizarre” category.
DE Xavier Kelly was injured Wednesday night in a moped accident. Defensive coordinator Brent Venables said that the injuries were minor, and that he’s thankful the injuries weren’t worse, because Kelly wasn’t wearing a helmet.
“He wiped out, somebody ran right into him. We’re lucky he’s alive,” Venables said per The State. “He got flipped, and got some scrapes and abrasions and banged his head, some stitches, I think, on his toe. He’s just very lucky very fortunate.”
After yesterday’s two bizarre NFL preseason injuries in which Eagles kicker Caleb Sturgis couldn’t play because of a concussion he suffered thanks to a pregame punt hitting him in the head, and Tom Brady missed the Patriots’ preseason game thanks to cutting his thumb with scissors, Kelly’s injured is less strange than those two, but still strange enough.
The team doesn’t expect Kelly to miss much time, but his status for the Tigers’ opener against Auburn in two weeks is uncertain.
