Getting to the NFL is the goal of almost every college football player. Florida International tight end Jonnu Smith is a player who has his eyes set on going to the next level.

His draft status may have taken a hit after he sustain injuries from an incident involving his girlfriend. On Halloween of this year, Mary Gaspar allegedly doused Smith with boiling water. He suffered severe burns on his head, neck, back, shoulder, and arm.

Gaspar is five months pregnant with Smith’s child and has now been charged with aggravated battery due to the incident. Smith, who is one of the better prospects on a below average football team, is now not going to be able to improve his draft stock and will miss the rest of the season. Smith has been on multiple watch lists due to his strong play throughout his career.

An arrest affidavit given to FIU police from Gaspar gives a clearer picture about what exactly happened.

“The two argued through the day over the attention Smith was paying her and their relationship. While in Smith’s dorm room and “feeling extremely emotional and stressed,” she told police, she boiled a pot of water. Then, she walked over to Smith and poured it on him.

When Smith didn’t react strongly enough for her, she started hitting him with her open hands, she told police.”

The account given by her, while seemingly truthful, is also downright scary. This will adversely change their lives, and hopefully they can find some peace in the weeks and months ahead.
