When you go to South Padre Island, Texas for spring break, you have certain expectations about what’s going to happen. You’re going to go swimming. You’re going to party. Jello shots will be involved. And you’ll probably get sunburnt.
One thing you don’t expect to happen is that you’ll have to save someone’s life. In the case of four current and two former Iowa State football players, they were in the right place at the right time on March 16 when they helped a woman who had driven her car into a canal and become submerged.
On March 16, 22-year-old Luisa Maria Castro drove her car hood-first into a canal, where it became almost completely submerged.
According to the Register, current seniors Jack Spreen and Anthony Lazard and former player Joe Doran came to her assistance, swimming over to the car and freeing her by breaking a hole in the windshield.
Senior Josh Jahlas, sophomore Spencer Benton and former player Matt Swoyer waited ashore and helped collect Castro there.
This is what a group of heroes look like. Jumped in and saved someone from drowning in their car. God bless. pic.twitter.com/K7AqG64KtQ

Incidentally, most of these players spent last season working with special teams, so they’re used to just dropping their shoulders and moving forward with reckless abandon.
Unfortunately for Castro, the reason for the crash became clear when she was arrested for driving while intoxicated.
Things could have been much, much worse for her if not for the Iowa State football team. That’s not something you say every day.
