Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh is having himself quite the eventful offseason, which is pretty par for the course. For any other coach, delivering a calf while taking a tour of a farm would be quite out of the ordinary, but with Harbaugh, we have come to expect the unexpected.

Harbaugh and his family took a tour of Fair Oaks Farm in Indiana on Monday morning so he could see up close and personal where the milk he endorses gets produced. As fate would have it, Harbaugh was on hand to witness the miracle of birth… of a cow. And he was more than happy to lend a helping hand in the delivery of the calf.

Go ahead and make all the jokes you want, because a Big Ten coach helping with the delivery of a calf in cow country is lined up on a tee. The Big Ten is known for its farmlands from one edge of the conference footprint to the other, but this may be the first time we know of where a Big Ten coach actually assisted with the birth of a cow.

You don’t see Urban Meyer getting his hands dirty on the farm like this. Nor do you see James Franklin of Penn State and its rich dairy tradition doing this. Heck, you don’t even see Kirk Ferentz or Mike Riley doing this, and they coach at Iowa and Nebraska, respectively. Aside from Harbaugh, if there is one coach in the Big Ten we might expect to get his hands in something like this, it just might be one of the newcomers: Minnesota’s P.J. Fleck.

Raise your game, Big Ten coaches. We expect more from all of you.
