When Bobby Petrino left Louisville to take a stab at coaching in the NFL, he thought he was going to get to coach Mike Vick with the Atlanta Falcons.

Vick’s legal trouble thwarted those plans and Petrino instead found himself leaving a note on players’ lockers to announce he was going back to coach at Arkansas. Now, all these years later, Petrino has a quarterback that even Mike Vick is praising.

Vick tweeted his praise for Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson following Jackson’s and Louisville’s latest triumph, a blowout 63-20 victory over No. 2 Florida State. The win was monumental for Louisville, as it helped stake a claim to being the top team in the ACC. Considering Clemson ran the conference and played for a national title last year and Florida State won a national title three seasons ago, that is no small feat. Jackson has been the biggest reason why the Cardinals are all of a sudden jumping to the top of the ACC and why he is garnering Heisman Trophy attention through three weeks.

Jackson has accounted for 18 touchdowns in the first three games of the season. His first two opponents may have been clearly inferior, but any thought about him slowing down against Florida State’s defense was completely dismantled, just as the Seminoles were on defense. If the Heisman Trophy were to be awarded in September, it would go to Jackson without any competition. It’s not, of course, and we have been tricked by September Heisman Trophy favorites before. Could this be different? Maybe. Pay attention in two weeks when Jackson leads Louisville on the road against Clemson, where he will go head-to-head against one of the 2016 preseason favorites for the Heisman Trophy, Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson. Out-duel him at Clemson, and there may be no looking back for Jackson (aside from a non-conference game against Houston in November — how about THAT matchup?!).

Going back to Vick, there is another reason he felt compelled to share the love for Jackson. Vick, referencing the fact he and Virginia Tech were unable to beat Florida State in a BCS Championship Game, noted Jackson has now done something he never did.
