Joining a new conference is never easy. Rarely does a school jump in with two feet and do little more than survive their first couple of years. Rutgers joined the Big 10 as a new pathway into the New York media market. The reasoning is shaky at best and as for poor Rutgers, they are barely staying above water.

As they went in facing Michigan, they had to figure that it couldn’t get much worse after the drubbing they were given by Ohio State the week prior. They quickly realize they were in for a world of hurt, producing comical headlines by games end. Final score, Michigan 78 and Rutgers 0.

Some of the best include:

  • Rutgers was outgained 600 yards to 39.
  • Rutgers punted 16 times during the game.
  • Only two series in the entire game were not three and outs, those were the last two series’ of the game.
  • Rutgers had seven series that ended in negative yards.
  • In the past eight quarters, Rutgers has been outscored a grand total of 158-0
  • The 78-point margin was the biggest in an FBS-on-FBS game this millennium, according to the database at Sports Reference. (h/t SBNation)

Naturally, as most drubbings go, Twitter roasted the hell out of the losing team.

Something to be proud of, most of the players will be able to tell their children about this great special teams moment.

Topical political humor, I like it!

Perfect NFL burn. Then again you could pretty much insert any NFL team that disappoints you there and it works quite well.

To make matters worse, the Rutgers band quit on their own team playing Michigan’s fight song “Hail to the Victors”.

A poor Rutgers fan even hugged a nearby Michigan fan after the first, first down of the game. That doesn’t even make me laugh, it makes me feel incredibly sad for the Piscataway, New Jersey based school.

If you know a Rutgers fan, give them a hug tonight. They definitely need it.
