Colleges and universities across the country seem to be in re-branding mode these days. That also includes Atlantic 10 member Saint Louis University — home of the mighty Billikens.
We’re guessing you are wondering just what a Billiken is first and foremost. It is a mythical creature that is supposed to “represent things as they are supposed to be.” Nothing says inspiring or intimidation like that ho-hum mythical creature, right?
There will be plenty of intimidation (and likely a few nightmares) coming from the Billiken mascot, now that he has been redone.
I mean, what in the heck is this:

What is this? Just a rip off of the TCU Horned Frog mascot, only in two-tone colors and with a more creepy and horrifying facial expression?
Heck, at least “Super Frog” has some kick-butt muscles and horns to speak of. It’s like they just created a head and then went to the nearest home-ec class at a local high school to sew together the rest of the costume.
All of that without even a mention of just how horrifying that face is. What’s the message from the eyes my friend — Sleep with one eye open…gripping your pillow tight?
Was someone listening to a little Metallica when designing this thing?
You mean to tell me a room full of athletic and academic elders were in a room and thought this was cool or not-nightmare inspiring? If that is the case, I’d seriously reconsider sending my kids there or letting them apply because that is a serious lack of judgement.
Last time I checked, mascots were supposed to be lovable, fun and easy on the eyes for the kids. Mascots aren’t supposed to inspire terror and horror in the looks of nine-year old kids let alone grown adults.
Sorry, but it should’ve been back to the drawing board for whomever designed that monstrosity. SLU — you missed the mark badly here.
