Will Muschamp's island house

In his second go-round as an SEC East head football coach, Will Muschamp is attempting to right some wrongs from his time at Florida. He’s also going to attempt to do it in some style, if his new home is any indication.

Muschamp has purchased a 9,417 square foot home on Lake Murray Island, somewhere around 30 miles from the campus of South Carolina in Columbia. The home was listed for $2.275 million, but in this rebounding economy (a booming one for head football coaches), Muschamp snagged a deal: he bought the house for $1.85 million. Not bad when you’re bringing in $3 million annually, even if you weren’t South Carolina’s top choice for the job.

The house itself sits on a 1.74 acre island and includes a 2,644 square foot guest house (perfect for recruiting visits), and also a pool and boat dock, because Will Muschamp could definitely decompress with fishing on his own private island. The main home has five bedrooms, five full and two half bathrooms, a library, media room, and a “Florida” Room, because even in South Carolina real estate, they pity Mr. Muschamp.

Stewart Mungo, chairman of local homebuilder Mungo Homes, lives in a comparable executive home on a peninsula and is familiar with Muschamp’s new digs.

“It’s just pastoral,” said Mungo, who has lived on the lake for 35 years. “You can watch the sunset over the water. You can be downtown in 25 minutes. You can walk out into your backyard and feel like you’re on vacation.”

Mungo has lived on the lake for 35 years, and therefore is perfectly primed to tell Muschamp this bit of important news, “You drive by and you can’t see [the house].” Great news for when South Carolina’s offense sputters against UMass!

“Being a football coach is like being in the military and being deployed,” Mungo said. The new house “is remote, it’s secure and nobody is going to bother him when he’s home. It’s a great place to raise children, and I’m sure that the people that live around there will embrace him.”

Muschamp will move his family to the new home when the school year at Auburn ends. If the house is any indication, no one will notice.
