When’s the last time a team that had five more losses than wins made the playoffs in the NFL? Hint: Never.

The San Francisco 49ers are off to a disappointing 1-6 start. That’s right, the 49ers have won one game and lost six. Just wanted to be clear there.

Despite the fact that San Francisco has lost five more games than they’ve won (if that hadn’t been made clear already), 49ers linebacker Aaron Lynch thinks they are one of the best teams in the league. At 1-6? What?

“We have the team,” Lynch said after 34-17 loss to Tampa Bay on Sunday. “We possibly have one of the best teams in the NFL, easily. Hands down. We need to know how to keep finishing games and work together throughout the whole game. Once we get that down, nobody’s going to be able to mess with us.”

San Francisco’s 34-17 loss wasn’t just bad, but it was also kind of depressing. After all, Tampa Bay is only 3-3 this season. On top of that, the 49ers’ defense gave up 513 yards of offense to a very young Buccaneers offensive unit.

Despite the fact that the defense has been shaky and that’s led to multiple losses, Lynch is confident his team is very good. Oddly enough, he’s not the only member of the 49ers defense that is confident they are much better than the 1-6 record indicates.

“I love this scheme,” safety Eric Reid said. “If everybody does their job, we shouldn’t get beat. But whenever there’s an explosive play, somebody is out of position. We just got to tighten up.”

It’s not going to get any easier going forward for San Francisco. After a bye week next week and then a game against New Orleans on November 6th, the 49ers visit the Arizona Cardinals on November 13th, and then host the New England Patriots on November 20th.
