For all the praise Aldon Smith gets on the gridiron, its his issues off the field that are talked about more and have been a bigger storyline throughout his career.

Another chapter was added to Smith’s off the field book this week when Smith was detained by police after he was in an accident with a cop car.

Smith is currently suspended by the NFL and was hoping to be reinstated by the NFL this month, but that looks less likely after his accident this week. On Thursday morning, the Oakland Raiders linebacker was detained by San Francisco police after he was a passenger in a car that collided with a police cruiser.

ESPN spoke with SFPD Office Giselle Talkoff who couldn’t confirm names of those involved, but also stated a 25-year old woman was driving and is currently under investigation for sobriety in the incident.

Talkoff also had this to say about a male involved:

She also said one adult male was “detained” for public intoxication and “should be released when he is sober” and that a third passenger was “cooperative” and released at the scene.

Talkoff said it was an open investigation to find out who was at fault.

The crash took place on Thursday at 8:30 am PST in front of the public safety building and involved an unmarked police vehicle with three police officers inside. Two SFPD officers went to San Francisco General Hospital for non-life threatening injuries, according to Talkoff.

Back on February 11th, Smith was named in a report by the SFPD that TMZ Sports reported was related to a domestic-related investigation. SFPD hasn’t released details about that incident since the story came out on February 13th, but no arrests have been made.

Smith was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers with the seventh overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft and has seemingly been involved in a questionable incident every year since:

January 28, 2012: Smith was arrested for a DUI in Miami Beach, Florida.

June 30, 2012: Smith was stabbed twice after breaking up a fight at his residence where two other people were shot.

September 20, 2013: Smith was in a single car accident in San Jose, California and was arrested for suspicion of a DUI and possession of marijuana.

April 13, 2014: Smith was detained and arrested after a situation at LAX where he was uncooperative with TSA, who said Smith claimed he was carrying a bomb. Smith wasn’t in fact holding a bomb, and was later suspended by the NFL for nine games during the 2014 season.

August 6, 2015: Smith was arrested in Santa Clara, California for a hit and run after DUI and vandalism charges. He was released the next day by the 49ers.

This incident is Smith’s second since that August 6th car accident, and second with the Raiders, who haven’t commented.
