For the second time in NFL history, a team converted a two-point conversion while on defense.

During Sunday’s game between the Baltimore Ravens and Cleveland Browns, the Ravens scored two points after blocking a Browns’ extra point and taking it to the end zone.

The Browns were leading 20-0 at the time and Cleveland rookie wide receiver Corey Coleman had just scored his second touchdown of the day. But during the Browns’ extra point attempt, the kick was blocked and Baltimore rookie cornerback Tavon Young corralled the ball and took it in for two points.

Prior to the 2015 season, a blocked extra point was automatically a dead ball and could not be returned for two points. But when the NFL moved the extra point back, it also allowed defenses to score on blocked PATs. The Carolina Panthers were the first team to score on a PAT while on defense. They did so in December 2015 against the New Orleans Saints.

Blocking a PAT and taking it back for two points won’t happen very often. But thankfully, if it does happen, we will get the chance to see some excitement. It’s just one more way the NFL has made the extra point attempt more interesting.
