Cam Newton had an MVP worthy 2015-16 season. He led the Panthers to a 15-1 record, combined to score 45 touchdowns and has become a genuinely admirable and fun guy, both on and off the football field. Just 13 months after he almost died in a car crash on his way to the Panthers’ team facility last season, Newton is taking every opportunity to love both the game, and life.

Newton picked up the Ed Block Courage Award for his excellent 2015, an award which honors courage on & off the field, voted by his teammates.

Despite his best efforts to be a good guy, not everyone is buying it. When celebrating the Panthers 31-24 victory over the Seahawks on Sunday, Newton – armed with a huge smile – grabbed a Seahawks 12th man towel and threw it.

It wasn’t an ill-intentioned move, more harmless fun. Still, a Seahawks fan named Sarah wrote an open-letter to the Panthers quarterback, and she was not impressed.

It’s one thing to bring God into it, but it’s hilarious to say Russell Wilson will be at a children’s hospital when Newton will be playing football because OF COURSE HE WILL BE, HE MADE IT TO THE NEXT ROUND. Hm… Cam Newton would never do something similar. Nope, never.

NFC Divisional Playoffs - Carolina Panthers v Seattle Seahawks

It’s not all been undeserved bad buzz for Cam, as his name has come up at, of all places, the Australian Open.

Cam’s got a big fan in American John Isner, who told Sporting News Newton was the “best athlete I’ve ever seen.” Isner admitted to loving the Panthers, and said he’s embraced Newton and the Panthers mentality.

“I’ve sort of taken on their mantra of ‘keep pounding.’ I’m going to try to make that my theme this year. That’s what they always say.”

Even Victoria Azarenka, who posted a shutout today, is doing the dab in support of Newton (OK maybe it’s unrelated but still). That said, maybe not everyone is a fan of her antics, either.

That was a joke, folks. Lighten up. (We think.)
