This practice kick went poorly for Drew Kaser.

The kicking game isn’t going so well for the Los Angeles Chargers today against the Dallas Cowboys. Regular kicker Nick Novak missed an attempt on their first drive and then was described as questionable to return with a back injury.

On a later drive, the Chargers got into easy field goal range, but opted to go for it on 4th and 13 instead rather than trust punter/emergency kicker Drew Kasar. This clip of Kasar warming up on the sidelines may explain why:

Maxwell Smart has the perfect response for that one:

In fairness to Kasar, field goals and extra points aren’t exactly his specialty. He’s never been asked to kick either during his two NFL seasons so far, or during his 2011-2015 tenure at Texas A&M. And he’s quite a good punter; in 2013, he set a SEC record with an average of 47.4 yards per punt, and was named first-team All-SEC, a Sporting News All-American and a finalist for the Ray Guy Award.

He was drafted in the sixth round by the Chargers in 2016, and has averaged 47.5 yards per punt (with a 40.5 net average) for his career (48.9 and 41.3 this season). So he’s valuable even if he isn’t the best at kicking. And Novak has since returned, and hit a field goal. That’s probably good for Los Angeles; while Kaser kicking a field goal might be entertaining, his missed attempt here suggests that it might not work all that well.
