For the first time since leaving San Diego, the Chargers are about to play a regular-season home game in Los Angeles. But don’t think the fans left behind in San Diego have simply moved on from their departed NFL team, because there will be some not-so-subtle jabs at the NFL on the way to this weekend’s home opener for the Chargers.
Chargers fan Joseph Macrae, a self-described diehard Chargers fan from San Diego, organized a GoFundMe campaign seeking $10,000 to pay for billboard advertisements that will appear on digital billboards leading to the StubHub Center this weekend. Each of the five messages will target the NFL, specifically commissioner Roger Goodell and Chargers owner Dean Spanos, and slam the league for a lack of loyalty to fans in San Diego, according to Fox 5 in San Diego.
One of the billboard advertisements that will be shown will have an image of Goodell next to text that reads “No Freaking Loyalty” to the right of the commissioner. The first letters will be highlighted in red.
Macrae encouraged fans of other teams that have relocated or plan to relocate in the future (the Rams and Raiders), and he has been given assurance from the billboard company that his ads will not be shut down by the NFL. The ads will run for three weeks on the digital billboards. The Chargers just so happen to be home at the StubHub Center for three straight games against the Miami Dolphins this weekend, Kansas City Chiefs next week, and the Philadelphia Eagles after that.
