The Arizona Cardinals are on the verge of missing the playoffs after reaching the NFC Championship Game a season ago. And while there’s no speculation about Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians being let go after the season, some has popped up over whether he will retire following the 2016 season.

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports is reporting that those close to Arians believe there is a chance he will retire following this season.

Here’s exactly what La Canfora had to say.

Cardinals coach Bruce Arians has endured two health scares this season and, after contemplating retirement a few years ago, some in the coaching community expect him to do the same again this winter. Arians’ health has been a concern in the past and he has talked of fearing for his life at times in past years due to health complications.

These health issues along with Arians’ age have also led family members to push Arians to consider retirement, according to La Canfora.

Thus far, the team has flat-out denied any such speculation. But after looking at Arians’ current situation, it seems like talk of retirement would make sense.

Let’s start with the health scares. After already battling cancer, the Cardinals’ coach has had two separate health scares this season. The first took place while Arizona was training in San Diego during the preseason. Then, following a loss to the Minnesota Vikings earlier this season, Arians was hospitalized.

Along with his ailing health, Arians is among the oldest head coaches in the NFL. At 64-years-old, he is tied with New England coach Bill Belichick and just behind Seattle coach Pete Carroll.

With all of this in mind, rumors regarding Arians’ retirement makes sense. And with the Cardinals’ window of winning looking like it is closing sooner rather than later, this might be the perfect time for Arizona and Arians to go their separate ways.
