Tell us what you  really think Eric Decker.

The New York Jets wide receiver said he was surprised when the team announced they selected Hackenberg in the second round of the NFL Draft.

“I was a little surprised, to be honest with you,” Decker said at a charity event in Manhattan, where he was honored by the United Way of New York City. “But Mike [Maccagnan, the general manager] and his scouts do their research and homework for a reason and they saw something special with him. I guess they wanted him earlier than later.”

Why would Decker be stunned about the pick? Well, he built up quite the relationship on the field with Fitzpatrick. The 29-year-old had the best season of his Jets career in 2015, notching over a thousand yards receiving and 12 touchdowns with Fitzpatrick quarterbacking the team. Why would he want a change when the current free agent’s play specifically benefited him?

Decker told ESPN New York would fair better with a veteran behind the helm and not necessarily Hackenberg.

“It’s a team that’s ready to win now, and we need someone with a veteran presence at the quarterback position. My job is to catch the ball, but obviously, I want what’s best for the team — and that relationship I want as well.”

Decker might be right. Fitzpatrick did a bang up job as quarterback last season and re-signing him should be a priority if the Jets want to keep their offense afloat. Still, Hackenberg is no slouch. He was a top rated prospect who’s got a good shot at becoming a starting quarterback some day – but if it was Decker’s call, that wouldn’t be happening anytime soon.
