The NFL season is over for the Dallas Cowboys and running back Ezekiel Elliott, so the star rookie is now hoping the NFL can accelerate the process of reaching an end for the ongoing investigation into alleged domestic violence incident.

We somehow went through the entire NFL season without the league officially making a decision on a possible punishment for Elliott after an alleged incident last year.

“I do want closure,” Elliott told reporters after the Cowboys’ 34-31 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. “I would rather it not drag on this long. If there was something to find, which there’s not, they would’ve found it by now. The police did a very thorough investigation. I will tell you this — it just seems like they’re dragging their feet right now. Who knows, man? I’m just ready for it to end.”

Elliott’s comments come at a time when the NFL is sending follow-up questions to Elliott about the assault accusations he faced in July from his ex-girlfriend, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. There is no timeline for an investigation process, and each case is handled differently based on how much information can be gathered. Elliott has remained consistent in suggesting there is nothing to see and he was not charged with anything by authorities, but the NFL continues to dig into the situation.

Until the NFL brings this process to a close, Elliott will continue to have this situation hover above him regardless if he is innocent or not. If the NFL continues to investigate and finds sufficient information to support any punishment from the league office, it is expected that would be handed down for the 2017 season.  Under the rules of the NFL, a player may be suspended for a violation of the league’s personal conduct policy even if no legal charges have been levied against the player.

Elliott has been under investigation by the NFL for an entire season now, and it will continue into his first offseason.
