Yahoo Sports put together an infographic with some polling results over the ongoing national anthem protests ignited by San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick. In it, the graphic suggests 44 percent of NFL fans would likely stop watching NFL games if more players protest the movement. Get your boots on, because the BS-meter is reading a record high amount of manure on that one.

The poll asked 1,128 Americans to respond to a number of questions related to the NFL and the ongoing anthem protests. As you can imagine, the demographics surveyed had some polarizing results.

For example, only 24 percent of white responders said they support Kaepernick’s protest, while 63 percent of black responders said they were in favor of the protests. Different age groups also offered a glimpse into how this issue is viewed. Of people 34 years and younger, just 30 percent said they opposed the protest (compared to 39 percent in support). Of the people over the age of 55 years of age, 65 percent said they opposed the protests.

It’s all an interesting perspective on how people from different backgrounds and demographics view this subject, and honestly there may not be much of a shocking revelation in it.

But what sticks out as a complete red flag on the BS Meter is the 44 percent who say they would likely give up watching the NFL if more players join in this protest movement. Give me a break. You’re not going anywhere, because the NFL has you wrapped around its mighty finger. You’ll continue to sit there every Sunday in front of your big screen wearing your NFL merchandise, chowing on your gameday menu selections just like you always do while you watch games with officials who have no clue what a catch is and players who have gotten into various levels of legal trouble over the years from gun charges to domestic and sexual abuse allegations to drug and alcohol charges and so on, even if a few players take a knee during the national anthem. You know it.

Maybe they’ll turn the game off for a week. Maybe even two. But the NFL will pull you back in, because it is a part of your sports mindset and you can’t live without it.

Yahoo closes its story about the poll results by saying 44 percent of the people want their football to be about football. We get it. You can’t be bothered to discuss real world social issues when you have to watch a football game. Maybe that’s why these players are demonstrating and protesting before the kickoff, and during your precious 60-minute gridiron pigskin action.
