You know how in recent years Peyton Manning called out “Omaha!” whenever he was trying to make an audible? The mayor of Ocean City, Maryland is making a push to have Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco call it his town’s name every time he is trying to change the plays in 2016.

Rick Meehan, the mayor of Ocean City, Maryland, wrote a letter to Flacco that was shared on the team’s website on Monday, and the mayor of OCMD is all in on making his sales pitch to become the next viral sensation at the line of scrimmage. Hey, it’s free publicity after all!

“Now Joe, we Marylanders won’t forget your march to the Super Bowl in 2013. Many OCMD residents are Ravens fans, and we have grown to love hearing your iconic “ALASKA!” call that has become part of your game,” Meehan wrote.“While I certainly don’t want to tell you how to play, I can’t help but wonder what would happen if you narrowed your choice of audible down from a state to a city—like OCMD, perhaps. I have a feeling that even more personal and team success could be in your future!”

Umm, OK.

If nothing else, the mayor has hit a home run when it comes to free publicity by having the team share his letter and thus have sports bloggers in search of content take a look at it and share it with some reaction (guilty as charged). Ocean City, Maryland is nice and most people in the northeast and mid-Atlantic know it well or well enough.

I’m not so sure Omaha has really benefited from Peyton Manning as much as Mayor Meehan is hoping he can translate for his town, but it’s a nice stunt. And this is the time of year when summer vacations are being planned, so this is perfect timing.

Oddly enough, Flacco’s hometown of Audubon, New Jersey is actually closer to Ocean City, New Jersey (61 miles) than Ocean City, Maryland (147 miles).

Well played, Mr. Mayor. Well played.
