Josh Gordon’s time in Cleveland could be over just as soon as it’s started again.

The talented wide receiver has appeared in five games over the past two seasons, after multiple suspensions related to substance abuse issues. Gordon has been reinstated by the NFL and will start the season with a four-game suspension. Now he’s back, rumors have circulated the Browns have been shopping the wide receiver – a claim denied by team officials. Still, Tony Grossi of ESPN.com wonders why Gordon’s name has popped up in the rumor mill at all.

He speculated the Browns might be floating Gordon’s name out in case they don’t believe he’s ready to return from his issues and want to get some value before an inevitable suspension.

“There is a cynical point of view out there that the Browns floated the story of interest in Gordon to promote more activity. That they are looking to cut their losses and get something for him before he self-destructs again.

The only reason for the Browns to even consider trading Gordon is if they fear he won’t stay clean and abide by his recovery program. Only they would know this.”

It’s a cynical view of the situation but does carry credence. Gordon has been the co-star of Johnny Manziel’s offseason disaster flick and has a history of difficulty avoiding drugs and alcohol. He’ll face an indefinite suspension if he fails another substance abuse test. Do the Browns really want to wait that out? It’s a tough decision. Gordon has immense potential but his career’s been obstructed by stupid decisions.

Cleveland will have multiple suitors if a Brown trade is orchestrated, but for now, after sticking it out through his suspensions, the best move would be to see what they have in him. Knock on wood Gordon can remain on the straight and narrow.
