The NFL still hasn’t found a halftime performer for Super Bowl LII. A report on Wednesday morning indicated that the league had made an offer to Jay-Z to perform at halftime, but he declined.

The Source first reported Jay-Z’s snubbing of the league, but didn’t offer a reason why. However, they did speculate that he could have declined in support of Colin Kaepernick, who got a shoutout from Jay-Z during a concert in New York last week.

Pro Football Talk also followed up on the story, providing a statement from the league that didn’t exactly deny the report.

“No decisions have been made on the performer(s) and we are not going to speculate on particular artists,” NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy told PFT by email. “Along with Pepsi, we know that we will put on a spectacular show. When it is time to announce her name we will do it. Or his name. Or their names.”

Last year, we learned that Adele declined the league’s offer in August, and the first report signalling that Lady Gaga would be the halftime entertainment surfaced on September 18th. So we should be learning who will be the featured act any day now, and in addition to it not being Jay-Z, I think we can rule Taylor Swift out of the running as well. Earlier this month, a report indicated that Swift would be performing at halftime of the College Football Playoff Championship, and wouldn’t be performing at the Super Bowl because she’s a spokesperson for Coke – and Pepsi is the Super Bowl halftime show sponsor.

Knowing how the NFL operates, they’ll choose the most milquetoast act possible to avoid upsetting anyone. I wonder which act fits that profile the best, but for those hoping for an exciting act, don’t hold your breath – it’ll probably be Coldplay again.

About Joe Lucia

I hate your favorite team. I also sort of hate most of my favorite teams.

  1. Actually, Jay-Z good have done some fantastic things. Brought in the remaining members of Linkin Park and others for the ultimate mash up show.

  2. So Mr Lucia is suggesting The NFL should purposely try to “upset someone” with a controversial halftime performer ??? Fans are already leaving The NFL in record numbers. By Mr Lucia’s logic, The NFL should hire the same PR consultant that Hillary Clinton and ESPN are using.

    1. I swear, does EVERY comment you make have to incorporate your stupid politics? Are you capable of commenting on a sports story without making a backhanded swipe at your political opponents?

      1. Alas, Mr. Bates, it is 2017 and pretty much EVERY column on this particular website involves socio/cultural/politics issues. This one certainly does. The recent Jemele-athon is all politics. NFL attendance is political. Kaepernick articles are political. Any Clay Travis article is political… etc etc. … … Hopefully you are not suggesting that I be BANNED from this site because my “stupid” political opinions are different from yours. Are you?

If you want my opinion on the designated hitter rule or “pop-ups” in digital media, suggest that AA columnists write about those subjects. FWIW… I like that the NL and AL are different re: the designated hitter. And I despise “pop-ups”. What do you think about the designated hitter and pop-ups?
