Brett Favre retired three times, and so far the third one has stuck. Though with Favre, you never really know.

Now San Francisco 49er Anthony Davis is just one behind the Hall of Famer.

Offensive tackle Anthony Davis told the 49ers earlier Monday he plans on retiring once again, according to various reports.

The 26-year-old sat out the entire 2015 season and retired out of nowhere after he announced on June 5th, 2015 he would not be playing the 2015 season so he could let his body heal. While it wasn’t an official retirement, signs pointed toward Davis ending his career.

On July 25th, 2016, just over two months ago, Davis filed his reinstatement paperwork. He was subsequently reinstated by the league on July 30th.

Now it seems Davis is hanging up his spikes for good as he recovers from a reported concussion.

Davis was the 11th overall pick by San Francisco out of Rutgers in the 2010 draft. Since he was drafted, Davis started 71 of 72 career games at right tackle. Davis’ original rookie contract was signed on Jul 30th, 2010 for five-years and $37.5 million, $15.95 million of which was guaranteed.

As the long-term effects of a long-term NFL career become more apparent, it’s not unreasonable to expect that we could see more stories like this going forward.
