Last season, Tony Romo famously lost his job as the starting quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys to Dak Prescott. Now, Romo thinks his time with the Cowboys is officially coming to an end.

Romo will turn 37 in April, but still thinks he has some juice left in him to quarterback a team through a couple more seasons.

Due to injuries, Romo hasn’t played 16 games in a season since 2012, although he did play in 15 in both 2013 and 2014. However, in 2015, Romo played in just four games after breaking his collarbone early on in Week 2. In 2016, Romo played in just one game after breaking his collarbone again.

During the 2012 season when Romo last played in every single game, the quarterback threw for 4,903 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 19 interceptions. He was also only 32 then.

For Romo to play two or three more seasons as a starting QB and not Prescott’s backup, he’ll have to be traded or released, and Romo thinks it’ll be the latter.

Other than Prescott being the starter in Dallas, another big reason why Romo may be moved sooner rather than later is his massive salary. According to Sportrac, Romo is owed a total of $24.7 million this year because of his $14M salary, $5 signing bonus, and $5.7M restructured bonus.

Here is how Romo’s contract is broken down in 2018 and 2019:

2018 (age 38 season) – $19.5M salary, $5.7M restructured bonus, $25.2M total.

2019 (age 39 season) – $20.5M salary, $3.2M restructured bonus, $23.7M total.

That’s a lot of money for a backup who is only going to create constant drama based on the owner, and certain loud members of the media, wanting him to start.
