If you’ve ever watched a behind-the-scenes TV show like Hard Knocks or Road to the Winter Classic, you know that the language can be a bit rough.

When people are moving at a high rate of speed and running into one another, you’ll tend to get injured players and a whole lot of pain. Should we expect similar language from the referees of the sport as well?

During the Columbus Blue Jackets and Nashville Predators game on Thursday night, referee Frederick L’Ecuyer had enough of players barking at him. So he decided to respond in kind.

Get ready for some NSFW language:

This will upset some fans of the game that don’t want to hear referees speaking like that, but in reality, they have to corral these players and make sure they stay in line. It makes sense that they sometimes respond like that.

This isn’t the first or last time that someone will pick up on a referee cursing at a player, but to hear it so brazenly during a game is hard for some to process. While these games are supposed to be “family friendly”, you have adults participating in a fast-moving, adrenaline-pumping sport.

What exactly do you expect? It’ll be interesting if the NHL makes a big stink over the incident or if they will let it slide. L’Ecuyer would appreciate some leniency here, and with the All-Star break coming up, he may just get a stern talking to.
