Ben Bishop

Losing teeth can be a regular occurrence for hockey players, but it’s highly unusual to see a goalie have his teeth knocked out mid-game. That’s what happened to Ben Bishop of the Tampa Bay Lightning Tuesday, though.

Down 4-0 to the Lightning, the Toronto Maple Leafs’ Peter Holland threw a shot on goal and it nailed Bishop right in the mask. That type of occurrence happens more often than you think, but the result of this one was Bishop spitting out his teeth.

Hockey players rarely stay down, so to see Bishop fall like that was a very scary moment. Seeing the trainer come out and deal with it is also nuts in its own right. Bishop somehow stayed in the game and was able to finish the game.

In the days of intense player safety, it is almost inconceivable to see players sustain those type of injuries and continue on. Hockey is slightly behind the times in that regard, and with it, you can feel somewhat uncomfortable with the way these type of plays are handled. However, it’s good to see that Bishop was able to recover.
