Radko Gudas could have a pretty decent career as a goalie if his current role as a defenseman for the Philadelphia Flyers doesn’t work out.

The Flyers were trailing 4-2 in the second period to the Pittsburgh Penguins and were in the final few seconds of a power play when the Penguins made a final effort to clear their zone. Gudas kept the puck in the attacking zone three separate times, setting up a critical goal from Claude Giroux.

It’s almost a shame Gudas only received an assist on this play.

The slide to keep the puck in the zone was impressive on its own, but then he followed it up with incredible reflexes both with his right hand and his stick. The amount of effort and coordination this required is only appreciated once you see things in slow motion. Live, the play was impressive, but when you slow things down you really see what really went into keeping the play alive for his team.

Gudas, one of the team’s most physical players, is coming off of a six-game suspension and desperately needed to prove he can make positive contributions for his team without stepping over the line. His assist on the Giroux goal will definitely help.

Ultimately, the Flyers fell to the Penguins by a 5-4 final.
