on Day 3 of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games at Carioca Arena 2 on August 8, 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

After winning a bronze for judo in the Olympics, Belgium’s Dirk Van Tichelt was sent to the hospital. The reason for the hospital visit was not a result from his bronze-medal match, but because he was assaulted on Copacabana Beach later that night.

If you have been paying attention to our Olympic coverage over the past few months, then you are well aware of the concerns about crime the city of Rio de Janeiro was facing and struggling to confront with the games creeping closer and closer. Olympians were warned of the dangers before heading to the games, but we now have at least one athlete who was a victim of crime in the streets of Rio. Ironically enough, it was a bronze medal fighter specializing in judo.

The thief managed to get away with a cell phone, but not the recently won bronze medal. Fortunately for Van Tichelt, there was no need for any medical treatment, although he is now rocking a solid black eye for the remainder of his stay at the Olympics.
