Lilly King

While waiting for her turn in the Olympic semifinals of the 100-meter breast stroke on Sunday, U.S. swimmer Lilly King watched her competition swim in the first heat of the semifinals. When the race finished, King wasn’t too happy with the results.

Russian swimmer Yulia Efimova took first in the event. With Efimova and Russia’s involvement in doping, King wasn’t too much of a fan. As Efimova celebrated her win and held up a finger, King responded with her own one-fingered reaction.

Efimova has become a point of controversy during this year’s Games. The 24-year-old was a part of the doping crackdown put on Russia. After being a part of the group of swimmers banned from Rio, Efimova was reinstated and has caused swimmers like King to express their frustrations.

Kudos to Michele Tafoya and NBC for asking the question that needed to be asked. And props to King for being honest with her answer. And what better way to express your frustration than to honor a legend in Mutombo.

Thankfully for all of us at home, this feud gets to be settled in the pool. King and Efimova will be competing against each other in the finals on Monday. It seems that the rest of the world will be pulling for anyone but Efimova. Throughout Sunday’s competitions, the Russian representatives have been booed mightily by the crowds in Rio.
