America’s favorite team of crime-fighting women is coming back to theaters in 2019, and it will continue an off-camera trend of seeing women take on a more vital role to the film-making process. Elizabeth Banks is set to direct the latest reboot of Charlie’s Angels.
Sony is taking another stab at the Charlie’s Angels franchise and could very likely be starting from scratch, rather than continue the story from previous films released in 2000 and 2003. The cast for the next installment in the franchise has not been announced, but it is widely expected this next film will deviate from the previous films starring Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, and Lucy Liu.
Instead, this could be an opportunity to showcase three younger women ready to kick butt on the big screen. If past conversations shed any light, could Britney Spears be tabbed for a role?

Having Banks signed on as a director is not to be taken lightly. Charlie’s Angels has always been a franchise built on the foundation of strong women taking care of business, but it has always been done under the lead of a man in the director’s chair.
The original television show in the 1970s was created by Ivan Goff and Ben Roberts. The short-lived TV reboot in 2011 aired just eight episodes, with two directed by a woman (Angela Robinson). On the big screen, the 2000 and 2003 films were directed by McG. Banks getting a chance to provide a woman’s eye to the direction of the franchise could be a welcome change to how Charlie’s Angels plays out.

While Banks as director could be groundbreaking for the franchise, this will not be the first time Banks has called the shots. After a pair of short film director credits, Banks took on the role of director for Pitch Perfect 2. Banks will also be the director of the made-for-TV movie The Greater Good, according to her IMDB profile, in 2019. So 2019 is shaping up to be a pretty big year for Banks.
Charlie’s Angels is scheduled to be released on June 7, 2019.
