We already brought you Dave Chappelle’s excellent opening monologue, which you should definitely watch if you haven’t already done so.

But for a digital short later in the show, Chappelle also brought back some classic Chappelle’s Show characters for a digital short based on The Walking Dead:

That’s Tyrone Biggums, the Time Haters, his white newscaster Chuck Taylor, and blind white supremacist Clayton Bigsby.

Chappelle was a welcome presence all night; his comfort in front of a live audience and with the sketch comedy format was readily obvious.

This was a nice throwback to his past comic life as well, and apparently means that he owns the rights to the characters; that hasn’t always been the case with Comedy Central programs, as Stephen Colbert found out when he tried to bring back his Stephen Colbert character.

So maybe we’ll see Chappelle again. He’s still a unique and necessary comedic voice, and NBC was very accommodating all night, leaving his monologue completely uncensored, despite multiple uses of the n-word, and one Trump joke about grabbing p****y. (He did apologize to Lorne Michaels after that one.)

A Tribe Called Quest also performed uncensored.

Chappelle should be an annual host, if he wants it.
