One of the most iconic characters in cinematic history is closer to getting a new look. On Tuesday, the Hollywood Reporter gave us a glimpse of the three actors who are believed to be on the the list of finalists to play a young Han Solo.

According to their reporting, the three actors involved in the final testing for the iconic role are Alden Ehrenreich (Hail, Caesar!), Jack Reynor (Transformers: Age of Extinction) and Taron Egerton (The Kingsman and Eddie the Eagle).

These three emerged from what is believed to a be a group of 10 actors who went forward to the last step in the process. Before that, it is believed that over 2,500 actors had been looked at or submitted themselves for the role.

All three finalists are interesting young actors, and no doubt Disney and those involved in this project are taking care to not do harm to the legend of Harrison Ford’s iconic character.

But why the need for a young Han Solo? It isn’t so much that Ford is in his 70s, but rather the want of Disney and its offshoot, Lucasfilm, to spin off the franchise of Star Wars as more than just the nine-film series.

If you haven’t already heard, Disney and Lucasfilm are looking to make a Star Wars spinoff featuring a young Han Solo. Already signed on to make the film are producer/directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (21 Jump Street and The Lego Movie).

Reports also indicate the movie is expected to come out in 2018. But beyond that, not much else is known as to what the spinoff will look like or it might focus on outside of the young life of Han Solo before we meet him in Star Wars: A New Hope.
