One of the most amazing things about superheroes in comics and film is that their superpowers or trusted equipment often defies belief for amazing results. The chances of us ever seeing a working Iron Man suit or Black Canary collar are unlikely. One fan, however, has turned a famous piece of superhero equipment, the Captain America shield, into a real working piece of tech.

James Hobson, aka the Hacksmith, posted a video on YouTube showing the process of creating a working Captain America shield.

The technology behind the shield is pretty ingenious. Hobson used two electromagnets mixed with high voltage to create a guard on his arm capable of lifting nearly 3,000 pounds. After obtaining a replica shield and a Captain America jacket, Hobson puts his creation to the test.

Hobson plans on showcasing the shield more in an upcoming video, but as seen in the video above, he’s able to catch the shield in mid-air and throw it via the electromagnets on his arm strap. While his technique might not be as strong as Steve Rogers’, it’s insanely impressive that he’s able to catch and throw the shield as if he’s Captain America himself.

Through a very creative use of electromagnets, Hobson is bringing the impossible to life. (Maybe he can team up with the guy who made his own Tony Stark arc reactor too, although that creation is nowhere near as impressive as the Captain America shield.) If superheroes ever manage to make their way into the real world, Hobson might be the real-life Howard Stark or Melvin Potter.
