The X-Men universe could soon be expanding on television.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Fox has picked up a pilot order for a new X-Men project from Matt Nix, who created Burn Notice for USA Network and is the showrunner for Fox’s upcoming APB. The untitled live-action show will focus on parents who discover their child is a mutant and have to go hide from the government in order to protect them. The family will meet up with an underground network of mutants.

Nix revealed last month the show will be connected to the X-Men universe, which is a good news, considering how muddled the film’s timeline has become. Nix said the show will feature both “new and familiar” characters while continuing the current X-Men universes continuity. It’s a promising detail for those clamoring for more of the Bryan Singer X-universe. Fox announced on Wednesday that Singer will direct the pilot, which draws those ties even closer together.

With Legion upcoming on FX, Logan soon coming to theaters and a New Mutants film currently in development, the X-Men universe is still firmly entrenched in modern-day pop culture. There’s no word on which character Nix’s series will follow, but considering how most of the popular and beloved ones have appeared in X-Men films over the past decade, I’d wager it’ll be an obscure one or one that’s completely new.

It’s cool to see the X-Men universe further expand. The movies have certainly run their course, but with a massive roster of characters, there’s plenty that could still be done in the X-Men universe. Let’s see what Nix can do should his pilot ever make the light of day and make it to a full series.
