If you had placed money on a member of N.W.A. working with Disney Studios and a Tony Award winning director on a musical, you may now collect your bets.

In an odd turn of events, Disney, Ice Cube, and Tony Award winning director of Hamilton Thomas Kail are combining to create a modern and musical take on Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist.

Two of the other producers, along with Ice Cube, are Marc Platt who worked on the Broadway hit Wicked and Jeff Kawtinetz, who is the CEO of The Firm.

The story of Oliver Twist is arguably one of Dickens’ more famous stories. The tale follows an orphan who goes from a life as a child laborer to a life as a member of a London gang. It was originally published nearly 200 years ago in 1838.

Disney originally adapted the story nearly 30 years ago in 1988 as Oliver and Company. The story was adapted again years later as the stage musical Oliver!

This third major adaptation, Oliver Twist, will be written as a modern musical with modern genres. That could be where Ice Cube comes in, since he’s currently on to play the leader of the gang, Fagin.

With Ice Cube already having experience producing movies in Straight Outta Compton and Ride Along 2 and Kail known for his collaboration with Lin-Manuel Miranda on Hamilton, the story is in capable hands. The only question, will it be very different than the original story?

No release date has been announced for Oliver Twist as of now.
