The third season of the critically acclaimed Fargo has added one more star to its roster. Jim Gaffigan will join a cast that already includes Ewan McGregor, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Carrie Coon.

According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, Gaffigan will take on the role of a police deputy working alongside Coon’s Gloria Burgle. The emphasis on the character played by Gaffigan, named Donny Mashman, is unknown but the odds are pretty good he will be the one delivering a well-timed quip from time to time. Why else would you add a comedian to the cast, right? That doesn’t mean Gaffigan will be there strictly for much-needed comedic relief. The show has a knack for delivering humor without resorting to stand-up comedian slapstick humor.

This is the next step for Gaffigan after two seasons of starring in his own show on TV Land, The Jim Gaffigan Show. Gaffigan and his wife, Jeannie, wrote and produced the show and have decided to step away so they can focus on their family life instsead. That gives Gaffigan time to work on his dad brand, as he would put it, but that did not close the door on other opportunities Hollywood had to offer. Given the popularity of Fargo, Gaffigan landing a spot on the cast was not one to pass on.

The third season will reportedly take place in the year 2010 and is scheduled to air sometime in 2017 on FX.
