Kong fire

If you’ve never seen any of the King Kong movie before, than this lede is a spoiler. Typically in King Kong movies, the giant monkey dies atop the Empire State Building. In Vietnam however, a real life Kong Kong statue didn’t even make it near the top of a building.

At a Vietnamese premiere of the new King Kong movie, Kong: Skull Island, in the city of Ho Chi Minh City, there were torch-wielding fire dancers, a volcano, and a giant statue of the beast. When the giant King Kong figure caught on fire, people attending the premiere thought it was part of the show. Little did they know it was the opposite.

The huge statue began to catch fire after a dancer left behind a lit torch, according to one report. However, a different story said the fake volcano was actually what started the fire.

Then again, the source of the fire isn’t the story here. Instead, it’s the fact that the giant monkey and parts of the nearby mall caught on fire, causing attendees to be amazed and then terrified as they ran for safety.

Here’s a full video of the incident:

The premiere was a big deal in Vietnam because a large portion of the movie was filmed there. The big difference is, I’m just guessing here, Kong doesn’t get accidentally burned to death by either a fake volcano or a lit torch left behind by a dancer in the movie.

Luckily, nobody was injured during the incident and the statue was extinguished in about 15 minutes, according to VICE.

Kong: Skull Island was released in theaters on Friday and stars Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, John C. Reilly, John Goodman, and Samuel L. Jackson.
