Time is a flat circle, even on Miami Beach.

The laws of Hollywood state that if a concept is successful, one must continue to run that concept into the ground as many times as it takes before it either reaches new heights or crashes and burns. That explains the thinking behind the news that Miami Vice is being rebooted on NBC.

Per Deadline, the Fast & Furious duo of Vin Diesel and screenwriter/producer Chris Morgan are producing the remade crime drama set in Miami. The head writer on the show will be Peter Macmanus (The Mist, Satisfaction).

In case you’re a millennial and are too busy ruining things to know, the original Miami Vice was a pop culture phenomenon. Created by Anthony Yerkovich and Michael Mann, the show starred Don Johnson as James “Sonny” Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas as Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs, two Miami detectives who worked undercover to bust drug dealers, mobsters, and other unsavory criminals lurking beneath the pastel colors of Miami Beach. The show ran from 1984 to 1989 and is best remembered for the colorful outfits and New Wave music cues.

No word yet on who will take up the mantle of the iconic roles or whether or not the show will be rooted in modern times or back in the 80s. It’s likely that the show won’t acknowledge the 2006 film adaptation of the series, which starred Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx.

In what should be a surprise to no one, rebooted TV shows appears to be the trend as networks work to find nostalgic angles that can hook viewers. A rebooted Hawaii 5-0 has been a long-running hit for CBS while The CW has a rebooted version of Charmed in the works as well. Not to mention the critical or commercial success of reboots such as Battlestar Galactica, Fargo, Twin Peaks, and Full/er House. Of course, the flip side of the equation is that sometimes the reboots fall flat. Just ask Lethal WeaponMacGyverTraining Day and Heroes Reborn how things went.
