With Saturday Night Live thriving on political satire, thanks in large part to the current political scene in Washington D.C. and Critic-In-Chief Donald Trump, it is no surprise there are rumors flying around that suggest NBC is looking to bring Weekend Update to a wider audience with a weekday edition.

According to a brief note from Politico, “NBC is in talks to air a 30-minute primetime weekly edition” of its show centered around the signature Weekend Update segments.

In a sense, NBC would be joining the weekly news humor cycle that already includes John Oliver and Samantha Bee by cooking up a weekly dose of news humor. These types of shows generally reside on cable, so bringing the trend to a network would be a new development in this particular category. Although not the norm, NBC and SNL would certainly be no strangers to airing the Saturday night comedy show during the week.

Aside from holiday-themed specials consisting of clip shows, SNL has gone live from New York during the week in the past, and not surprisingly, it has come at times of hot political conversations sweep the nation. But as our Jeremy Klumpp wrote in his latest SNL recap, Weekend Update is one of the worst parts of the show right now. So is more of it really a good idea? Or could the segment get better in an expanded edition, as it did during last summer’s political conventions?

Will NBC give us more Alec Baldwin as Donald Trump, and perhaps Melissa McCarthy as Sean Spicer? If they do, we know there is at least one person who will be watching from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
