Domino's reindeer

Christmas hasn’t even happened yet, but a Christmas related promotion in Japan has already come and gone.

Towards the end of November, Domino’s Pizza in Japan announced that they would be training reindeer to deliver pizza across the island nation. The training was going both well and poorly.

But now, Dominos is reportedly canceling the promotion entirely. The reason why?

Well, unsurprisingly, controlling reindeer is difficult.

No seriously. That’s really why this promotion was canceled. Raise your hand if you thought controlling reindeer would be easy. Nobody? Anybody? Exactly.

Part of the promotion was the little delivery driver icon in the GPS tracking app would be switched to a reindeer, and that will remain. On the other hand, the actual reindeer will sadly be busy helping Santa delivering presents to the rest of the world.

“We have decided that we can not meet our criteria for reliability and safety. Although it was judged to be difficult in many cheers from everyone, the icon of “GPS DRIVER TRACKER” will be reindeer until the Christmas as announced the other day. On this occasion, please use “GPS DRIVER TRACKER” to see the reindeer design icon which is a piece of dreams.”

CNet has more details about the decision as well as a plan B the company had to keep the Christmas spirit alive:

Domino’s clearly had an inkling the whole reindeer thing wasn’t going to work because it already had some reindeer-theme delivery bikes ready to go instead. The scooters are decked out with reindeer antlers and plush reindeer snouts on the front. The company even thought to attach fuzzy haunches and a tail.

So let’s go back to the drawing board. This idea of “hey let’s get reindeer to deliver pizza!” is one that sounds great in theory until you realize theory doesn’t always make sense or work out. Then again it is 2016, and I wouldn’t be surprised if someone suggested lions as part of a Lion King promotion at some point.

Well, at least we have this promotional video to remember this incredibly silly idea.
