Tom Cruise is doing the media PR tour to promote his upcoming summer blockbuster, The Mummy, but all the attention seems to be shifting on an upcoming Cruise film that some people have been waiting decades for – Top Gun 2. Even if you have never seen the original Top Gun, chances are you are familiar with at least one of the most iconic scenes, and Cruise is already teasing an update to it.

That’s right. We’re talking about the volleyball scene.

“[There] may be a volleyball scene,” Cruise said in a media interview with Entertainment Tonight. “Maybe. We’ll see. I have not told anyone in the world as much as I’ve just told you right now.”

Before there was slow motion lifeguards running down the beach, the Top Gun volleyball scene may be the most well-known scene in cinematic history with all of its machismo oozing from a shirtless and sweaty Cruise and Val Kilmer. Even if you are not into dudes, you have to respect the game. It’s also the epitome of 1986 with its choice of music (perhaps being inspired by one too many Rocky montages) and choice of attire by those who were wearing athletic gear for some two-on-two beach volleyball.

Top Gun: Maverick is currently in the pre-production stages with no release date publicly targeted at this time. Cruise is currently filming his sixth Mission Impossible movie that will be coming out in 2018, so it may still be a few more years before we get to a Top Gun sequel.

For some fans, an updated beach volleyball scene may be worth the wait, even if Cruise is in his upper 50s. He’s 54 now. Tom Cruise can practice more effectively with a volleyball machine now. That said, the idea of seeing a couple guys pushing 60 playing beach volleyball could be humorous.
