After the flop that was True Detective season two, a third season was up in the air. But on Monday, we learned that season three does appear to be in the cards, and Nic Pizzolatto will some help in putting the show together.

According to a report from Entertainment Weekly, David Milch (the creator of NYPD Blue and Deadwood, among other shows) will be “working” with Pizzolatto on the show in an unknown capacity. In addition to that news, EW reports that Pizzolatto has has written “at least” the first two episodes of a third season.

However, there are plenty of caveats to this news, most notably the fact that HBO hasn’t actually signed off on season three yet.

The extent of Pizzolatto and Milch’s collaboration is still early days and not yet formalized. Obviously, Milch’s experience as a writer will be a key component, but for the record he’s not expected to serve as the True Detective showrunner (at this stage, there is no specified season 3 showrunner). Also keep in mind a third season has also not yet been greenlit, so new episodes are far from certain.

Alright, so the ball is now back in HBO’s court, if this report is to be believed. Pizzolatto is writing a third season. Milch is on board in an unspecified role. If they don’t rush the writing, maybe we could have an interesting project on our hands sometime in 2018. Will it involve Matthew McConaughey? Hopefully!

Just don’t cast Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn this time.
