At first, Rami Malek appeared at a loss for words after winning the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Elliott on USA Network’s Mr. Robot.

Then, it turned out he had the perfect opening to his acceptance speech:

If you’ve seen Mr. Robot, you know that’s so good. (If you haven’t, no spoilers — other than to say his character serves as a self-consciously unreliable narrator, hence the joke.)

Here’s the rest of his speech from someone in the theater:

The 35-year-old entered the night as the favorite to win the award, despite being nominated in an impressive category including Kyle Chandler, Bob Odenkirk, Liev Schreiber, Kevin Spacey and Matthew Rhys. Malek turned in an incredible performance on Mr. Robot, as the cybersecurity engineer turned “fsociety” vigilante hacker through whom the show’s story is filtered to the audience. Malek’s had a long journey to get where he is, and Mr. Robot is actually his first lead role.

It might be the first win for Malek, but his strong work on Mr. Robot could make him a perennial candidate for years to come. The Emmys win is a well-deserved honor.
