Avalanche goaltender Varlamov brought up on assault charges

Colorado Avalanche goaltender Semyon Varlamov has officially been handed down charges by the Denver District Attorney’s Office stemming from an incident last month. As first reported on by the Denver Post, Varlamov will be heading to court on one count of assault in the third degree, a Class 1 misdemeanor in the State of Colorado. If you’re unfamiliar with the details of the incident, we did a write-up on it when Varlamov was first arrested and posted bail.

The Colorado Avalanche have not made a comment with regards to this incident since its happened but a Russian official has stated these charges are bogus and a way that the United States is trying to hamper Russia’s chances at winning a gold medal at the Sochi Olympics when Varlamov was first arrested.

This situation is tragic and our thoughts and prayers go out to the victim in this case, who was Varlamov’s live-in girlfriend, and hope she gets whatever therapy and closure she needs. That being said, it’s important to let the courts take control and find out what really happened that night. If Varlamov is convicted on the assault, he faces a maximum of two years in the county jail due to the crime being what is known as an Extraordinary Risk Crime. Varlamov is due back in court to face these charges on December 2nd in Denver.
