Charles Wang agrees to sell the New York Islanders

The Charles Wang era as the majority owner of the New York Islanders is coming to an end. The current owner of the Islanders has agreed to sell the team to Jonathan Ledecky and Scott Malkin, pending the approval of the NHL. As seen on NESN, Ledecky and Malkin will be minority owners and Wang will retain the majority for the next two years. At that time the new owners will then acquire the majority stake.

Ledecky on the deal:

“We are pleased to have the opportunity to become partners in the New York Islanders with Charles, and to pursue our shared dream of winning a fifth Stanley Cup for the greatest fans in the NHL.”

Wang commented as well:

“I’m thrilled that Jon and Scott have agreed to join me as we start the Islanders’ final year at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. I look forward to a long and successful partnership.”

It’s not a clean break for the Islanders from Wang, but it’s a big step in the right direction. It’ll take a couple years to take hold, but Islanders fans have to feel a sense of relief knowing that there is hope on the horizon.
