The rise of Gustav Nyquist

Just when it looked like the Red Wings were down and out, their impeccable ability to find draft picks paid off again.

Earlier this season, the name Gustav Nyquist meant nothing. These days, when the Red Wings play, it seems Nyquist is doing incredible things. If you haven’t been paying attention to Nyquist, you might want too. He is willing the Wings into the playoffs.

On Wednesday night, in a must-win game for the Red Wings, Nyquist delivered. He scored this goal to give the Red Wings a 3-2 lead over the Bruins:


With two points, the Wings up their playoff changes by +10 according to sportsclubstats, and now have a 93% chance of making the playoffs.


The NHL noticed Nyquist naming him the second star of March, after tallying 12 goals in 15 games. [ mlive ]

But Nyquist has been doing work well before that. He sits with some elite company on the goals-per-game list.


Now that the playoffs look likely for the Wings, this may be the first time you are hearing about Nyquist, but it may not be the last.
