5 NHL players you would want as your son

After the Bruins and Rangers Friday matinee affair, the two teams faced off with a war of words through the media. Claude Julien and Brad Marchand posited that Henrik Lundqvist had done some acting in regards to a right knee that connected to Lundqvist’s head. Alain Vigneault didn’t take too kindly to those words and fired back with this quote here:

“Well, (the Rangers public relations staff) filled me in a little bit on what was said after the game,” Vigneault said, responding to a question from the Daily News. “I mean it’s a little disappointing. Obviously everybody saw the knee to the head. The comments on Hank were very inappropriate. The way Hank conducts himself, on the ice, away from the rink, off the ice, the example that he sets. Who would you rather have as a son, Henrik (Lundqvist) or Brad Marchand? For him to say things like that about Hank, totally wrong, and probably Claude is getting a little older and needs to check his eyesight.”

My mind being the way that it is immediately started going to a weird, weird place. Who would you want in the NHL as your son in a completely hypothetical, parallel world? Luckily I am here to tell you the answer.

5. P.K. Subban

I don’t think there is a player in the game right now that exemplifies fun more than Pernell Karl Subban. Other than being one of the best defensemen in the league, he may have the best sound bites in the league too. One of my personal favorites before Game 7 against the Bruins in 2014:

“It’s going to be great, I can’t wait for the crowd, the noise, the energy in the building. I can’t wait to take that all away from them.”

I would want my son to live the game and enjoy it for what it is, just a game. Smiling and playing a sport you love for a living. I don’t think anybody in the league appreciates it more than Subban. Add in his amazing charitable contributions and you have the ideal son.

4. Zach Parise

On a personal note, who wouldn’t want their son to return home and be with them for the last remaining parts of their life? It is exactly what Parise did and he was able to bring a friend as well in Ryan Suter. As Zach’s father JP was fighting cancer, JP promised even though he had stage four cancer that he would make every single one of Zach’s games. Zach was willing to do anything and everything for his father and that is a trait that every father should want in his son.

3. Mike Fisher

This one may not be about Mike Fisher but more about his wife Carrie Underwood. Mike Fisher is a great hockey player and has been one of the cornerstones of the Predators for a long time but I think having Carrie Underwood as your daughter-in-law may be one of the best perks in the world. You want to go to one of the worlds best country concerts? Mike and Carrie will hook you up but let’s be real here – it is Carrie who is doing it all. She may overshadow him but who really cares, you have the equivalent of a hockey power couple.

Sorry Mr. and Mrs. Phaneuf.

2. Aaron Ekblad

Other than being a handsome and young guy, Ekblad has a lot going on for himself. He plays in Florida where not a lot of attention is thrown his way and he is also the reigning Calder Trophy winner – not a bad start for the 19-year-old defenseman. You also shouldn’t forget that in Ekblad’s rookie season he lived with teammate and captain Willie Mitchell, who take a father-like role for the young man. A fantastic article courtesy of Katie Baker highlighted this relationship and produced this fantastic visual:

“Practice had ended hours ago, and the Mitchells teased Ekblad for being “hangry.” Megan (Willie’s wife) reached into a leather satchel fixed to the back of her bike and handed him his cell phone, wallet, and a dry shirt, like a mom producing Kleenex from the depths of her purse.”

Ekblad sounds like he needs to be babied every once in a while but that is alright. It looks like he has just the family to take care of him.

1. Marko Dano

I don’t believe there is a player in the league right now who is in as much awe of playing in this league as Marko Dano. Dano who was traded by the Blue Jackets this past offseason couldn’t be a more adorable person if he tried. He thanked the the Blue Jackets profusely after he was traded, not to get out of Columbus but to thank them for everything they did for him, a kind but unnecessary move for a player who had only been in the organization for two years.

He also is a constant GIF machine, producing on ice moments that prompt you to just immediately smile.

Dano-and-Anisimov

I call this one: “Once teammates always teammates”

This next one I lovingly call: “Smile”

Dano can’t help but be a lovable goof and for that reason, he is my number one son. I LOVE YOU MARKO.
