Former NHL defenseman Ian White arrrested, faces multiple weapons charges

When NHL commissioner Gary Bettman mocked the NFL and said back in October 2014, “Our players know what’s right and wrong,” he couldn’t have been more wrong. Another week has passed and another NHL player (albeit a retired skater) has been charged with a crime.

Former defenseman Ian White, 31, was arrested late last week and charged with multiple weapons offenses, reports TSN.ca’s Rick Westhead.

From his report:

White faces two charges of careless use or storage of a firearm or prohibited device, two charges of possession of a firearm in an unauthorized place and single charges of unauthorized possession of a firearm, unauthorized importing of a prohibited or restricted firearm, and breach of recognizance.

Those are very serious accusations, but White has a checkered past in regards to the law. He was charged in 2006 with driving while disqualified. Why was his license suspended? Because White was charged for impaired driving in both 2005 and 2006. He’s no stranger to idiocy.

As Westhead notes, White could face serious jail time if convicted.

According to Canada’s Criminal Code, White faces a maximum of two years in prison for each careless use charge, up to five years in prison for the unauthorized possession charge, up to five years in prison for possession a firearm in an unauthorized place, up to five years in prison for unauthorized importing of a firearm and up to four years in prison for a breach of recognizance.

White had a decently long NHL career, appearing in 503 games split between the Maple Leafs,  Flames, Hurricanes, Sharks and Red Wings. He last played in the NHL in 2012-13 with the Wings and retired following stints in both the KHL and AHL.
