Scott Hartnell receives questionable major penalty for charging Ben Bishop

Scott Hartnell picked up an extremely questionable five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct for charging Ben Bishop. Hartnell went behind the net and made contact with Bishop while the goaltender played the puck, but does this contact justify such a harsh sentence?

There is contact. No one is disputing that fact. Hartnell also could have done more to avoid said contact. That being said, at most this should be a two-minute minor.

The NHL has removed game misconducts off of players’ records in the past. This is another instance in which the penalty on the ice doesn’t fit the crime.
