Filip Forsberg signs six-year deal worth $36 million

The NHL Draft has come and gone and here comes free agency in all of its glory. RFA’s have the ability to talk to other teams now and the Nashville Predators didn’t want any conversations to take place with Filip Forsberg. They signed Forsberg to a six-year, $36 million deal. Is Forsberg now considered a cornerstone player for the Predators? How does his deal compare to his peers?

The Swedish winger has back-to-back 60-point seasons on his resume and with it he puts himself in a special category. This past year only 85 players hit the 50-point mark. It is an exclusive club and those are the players you want to invest your money in. His deal is identical to Brandon Saad’s deal. Comparing the two players, it seems like a fair trade off. Saad has the playoff pedigree, but has only gone over fifty points twice, while Forsberg is the better scorer and is slightly more dynamic.

The big part of the deal is now concerning the future and the other big asset they own, Ryan Johansen, who is going to need a new contract next offseason. They have plenty of deals coming off the books, but the money they put into that deal could hamper them long term.

The money you invest in good players is never a team’s downfall. It is always the death by a thousand cuts mentality. This is a good deal, much like many other deals on the Predators, but they just need to be wary of what comes next. Will they be able to keep their core intact? Only time will tell.
